~ ONTARIO ELECTION 2007 ~
"Does Jim Chapman believe his party leader's 'involving law enforcement officers in partisan politics' was also a 'serious ethical lapse'"?
AS REPORTED over at londontopic.ca, Jimmy Chapman, Ontario Progressive Conservative candidate in London Fanshawe, has his panties in a tight knot over incumbent Liberal MPP, Khalil Ramal's, release of a constituency update.
Chapman is calling the information postcard "campaign camouflage." But none of the other candidates in the race are perturbed by the mailing judging by the report.
The NDP's Stephen Maynard seems to be giving the whole matter a shrug while the Green Party's Daniel O'Neail says Chapman has election signs up already so maybe he should keep his mouth shut. There is another foaming-at-the-mouth candidate in London Fanshawe but I don't recall the name and, really, who cares?
So, if the other candidates don't care and Chapman already has signs up, what is Jimmy's problem?
Well, it seems Ramal included a nice photo of he and police chief Murray Faulkner shaking hands. GASP!
In fact, Jimmy Chapman protested that the picture is "in contravention of a long-standing policy against involving law enforcement officers in partisan politics. This suggests a serious ethical lapse on the part of Ramal's handlers."
Let's pause there for a breath. A long breath.
Now, repeat that last bit slowly: "in contravention of a long-standing policy against involving law enforcement officers in partisan politics. This suggests a serious ethical lapse on the part of Ramal's handlers."
A "serious ethical lapse"? Do all you other candidates have that? One more time: Involving the chief of police in partisan political campaigns is a "serious ethical lapse." Got it?
Does anyone remember Jimmy Chapman's party leader, John Tory, whirlwinding into London just to involve the same Chief Faulkner in a partisan political event? I do. It was back on July 7th, 2006. PC leader John Tory took Murray Faulkner downtown for a photo-op. The media was all over it.
So, does Jim Chapman believe his party leader's "involving law enforcement officers in partisan politics" was also a "serious ethical lapse" or is that, somehow, different?
I hope someone asks Jimmy that question. I can hardly wait for the answer.
