Outstanding London baseball historian George Lambourn is dead at age 89

GEORGE ARCHIBALD LAMBOURN (pictured left), in his 90th year, peacefully passed away at University Hospital, London in the early sunny spring morning of Thursday, March 4, 2010.
George was the beloved and devoted husband to the late Irene Eva Lambourn (nee Allard). He is eternally loved, sadly missed and survived by his daughters Nancy Jane Lambourn- Miller and Juliette Anne Baskette, grandsons Michael Patrick and Gibson George Miller, Barnes and Noble, sons-in- law Joe Miller and John Baskette, cousin to Bucky Smith of Texas, Jim and Susan Elie, David and Marybeth Gibson, Pastor Katherine and Jane Davis.
Son of the late James Oscar Lambourn and Nancy Anne McMurphy and brother to the late Richard Lambourn, Betty Elie and Marjorie Anne Patrick.
He is survived by brother Ross Lambourn and sister-in-law Irma Lambourn of Brampton. George was brother-in-law to the late Gilbert Lambourn and the late Marcel Elie.
George is the nephew of the late George Mooney Gibson, catcher/ manager of the Pittsburg Pirates Baseball Club and winner of the World Series in 1909.
A Second World War veteran, avid baseball historian and fan, member of the Friends of Labatt Park, Kareoke performer, ball room dancer and master gardener, George had an enthusiastic zest for life. Last winter he toured South America on the Queen Mary II and said his favourite part was passing around Cape Horn.
A brilliant and wise conversationalist, historian and geographer he was also a long-term winter resident of Zephyrhills, Florida, and lifetime resident of London, Ontario.
One of many magnificent accomplishments was the accumulation of a great number of dear friends.
He and his family wish to thank them all for their love, support and friendship over the years, particularly Brad, Ed, Bill, Annie, the Maggies staff and patrons, his breakfast club at the Early Riser, neighbours and most recently the social workers, nurses, Doctors, staff and patients he met and endeared to himself at University Hospital, London.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 7th from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North.
The funeral service will be conducted at St. George's Anglican Church, 227 Wharncliffe Road North, on Monday, March 8th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
Donations in memory of George may be made to St. George's Anglican Church or to the charity of one's choice. A Masonic Service under the auspices of King Solomon's Lodge #378 will be held on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
