    More Hidden History of Hamilton Road ~ A Local History Fair


    For Immediate Release

    WHEN: Saturday, July 31, 9 am - 4 pm
    WHERE: At the Richard E. Crouch Branch Library, 550 Hamilton Road, London, Ontario, Canada

    REMEMBER WHEN there seemed to be a variety store or a gas station on every corner?

    Mike Rice will share his extensive collection of photographs documenting Hamilton Road in the 1940s and 1950s.

    See antique Starr-Gennett record players sold on Hamilton Road, plus pictures of industries and schools from the collection of Douglas Flood.

    SOHO historian and author Alice Gibb presents the industries and railways that flourished South of Horton Street Included are rare photos of the SW Traction Line and the London and Port Stanley Railway.

    Share memories of the Ontario Arena with Brian Logie, noted sports historian and see vintage sports equipment including c1920s Tecumseh bats made locally.

    View photographs, artifacts and ephemera documenting: oil refineries, factories, railways & streetcars from the Age of Steam.

    The Crouch Resource Center will present documents from Hamilton Road’s oral history project and honor community building activities including the work of John and Carrie Kirkwood, Norah Lanning, Alice Gibb and others. Breaking News: The Hamilton Road Community Association will introduce proposals for highlighting the heritage of Hamilton Road using historic plaques and house signs at this event. This community revitalization initiative follows similar projects in the Old East Village and SOHO neighborhoods.

    The London and Middlesex Historical Society will host a display on the origin of area street names.

    The Hidden History of Hamilton Road, a Heritage Fair, Saturday July 31, 9am
    to 4pm Crouch Branch Library, 550 Hamilton Road.

    Breaking News:

    Bill Paul, London’s Town Crier will officially open the Hidden History event at
    11 am and launch a walking tour of the Crouch neighborhood.

    The walking tour includes the Homister House, Trafalgar School, the site of
    the Rex Theater, and highlights other Hamilton Road landmarks.

    Meet the authors! Local history writers Catherine McEwen and Jennifer
    Grainger provide historical background on the Newmarket Race Track, the
    refining industry and surrounding communities such as Crumlin and Lilly’s
    Corners.

    The London and Middlesex Historical Society will provide research on the
    origins of area street names. The Society is opening its vaults to offer copies
    of the Historian and other local history publications at bargain prices.

    Arthur McClelland, Librarian of the Central Library ‘s Ivy Family London Room
    will provide guidance on such topics as researching your family tree or
    discovering the history of houses, businesses, and other sites of interest to
    the public.
