It is said that if all of the transport of food into London stopped today the local supermarkets would have 3 days supply of food on their shelves. This makes one pause to think about where our food comes from and then wonder what we can do to bring about a more secure food supply. It should also cause us to wonder how products can be produced at a cheaper rate in far off lands and be shipped here for less than what it costs our local farmers. This then leads us to add in the additional costs to the environment caused by heavy use of pesticides and fertilizers and the harmful costs to the people in other countries who are required to harvest and process the crops.
When our local strawberry growers cannot compete against strawberries packed in plastic from California, during peak strawberry season – we have a problem. When local garlic growers cannot compete against the garlic imported from China – we have a problem. When the last of our fruit canning facilities closes and the operation moves to far away lands - we have a problem.
The good news is these problems have a solution. It is called relocalizing our food supply and we will discuss it at length on February 11th at the general meeting of TREA. This meeting is open to the general public so bring your family and friends.
Join us to add your voice to that of a growing group of concerned Londoners and perhaps even take some steps towards the concept of The 100 Mile Diet. .
Fair Trade Coffee/Tea provided. Please bring your own mug.
